The Quality Assurance Specialist uses his/her education & expertise to accomplish quality system planning, implementation, auditing and follow-up activities throughout the manufacturing operations.  The Specialist serves as a quality systems developer and internal auditor to actively support the Company’s objectives of providing consumers with high quality products at the most reasonable cost.
This position plays a key role in turning supplies and raw materials into high quality food products efficiently and safely.  The Specialist is charged with assuring that both the materials and the process used to make our products are top notch.  The goal of this position is to ensure that--through effective planning, organizing, and control--the Company always complies with the processes and policies that we, our customers, or regulatory partners have identified as best for our business.
The successful Quality Assurance Specialist will be able to use data-gathering and analytical techniques, combined with creative, outside-the-box style thinking, to develop and implement Quality System improvements.  
  • Participates in the development, implementation, support and coordination of the internal audit activities of the manufacturing processes that monitor quality and food safety systems. 
  • Work with others to ensure highly disciplined compliance with all product and process quality parameters and standards, including specifications, approved methods, procedures, practices, and systems.
  • Serves as a technical resource and team member in planning effective quality systems, procedures and methodologies to assure optimal quality & food safety.
  • Assists Purchasing as needed with supplier evaluation programs. 
  • Perform and/or coordinate external audits of material suppliers/vendors to ensure compliance with regulatory and Chelsea Milling Company requirements.
  • Conducts technical laboratory analysis and statistical analysis, as needed, to supplement the work of the Quality Manager.
  • Provides back-up support to the Supplier Specialist, Incoming Quality Inspector, and Quality Assurance Technicians.
  • Facilitate activities that engage, involve, and enable Company personnel with information and tools for continuous improvement. Assists in managing effective corrective action program, which includes proven problem-solving methodologies, data collection/analysis, and ongoing verification of solution effectiveness.
  • Assists with 3rd party, corporate and regulatory food safety audits and inspections.
  • Participates in related audits, such as AIB, GFSI, FDA, State, Kosher, etc.
  • Assures the quality, content, format, and timeliness of regulatory communications and documentation.
  • Assists in effective communication and education of CMC personnel in all internal and external quality requirements.
  • Performs fact-based assessment and audits of all Quality functions, while ensuring that all records, procedures, processes, materials and equipment are in compliance with regulatory and internal requirements.
  • Assists with Quality Systems document control programs and databases to ensure that the most current and pertinent information is in use.
  • Assists in implementing controls in various key points throughout the operation and aids in the training of Company personnel to use these tools.
  • Uses various quality tools to identify and eliminate sources of scrap, downtime, and variability.
  • Design, recommend and then implement programs to monitor calibration and accuracy of all analytical procedures and equipment in the lab and in the plant.
  • Provide risk assessment analysis. 
  • Help manage issues with non-conforming products to assure proper control, minimize losses and provide analysis to eliminate future occurrences.
  • Conduct sanitation and product safety inspections, including HACCP.  Ensure the facility meets regulatory, sanitation, product safety and product quality standards.  Provide technical expertise to resolve problem areas.
  • Support plant continuous improvement initiatives and total employee involvement.
  • Manage the entire hold process from beginning to end for each product hold.
  • Key areas of accountability:
  • Material Handling
    • Ingredient and finished product traceability knowledge
    • Hold order process knowledge
    • Ensure compliance with policies, procedures and specifications
    • Partner with key suppliers, purchasing, R&D to improve vendor compliance to specifications and specification impact on product quality and productivity
  • Laboratory This includes staying abreast of current and pending requirements, developing and maintaining internal policies and procedures, and managing ongoing compliance.
    • Product attribute testing
    • Document Control
    • Collect, analyze and interpret sensory and analytical data to make quality evaluations and recommend action plans
    • Equipment troubleshooting, maintenance and calibration
    • Work effectively with both external suppliers and internal co-workers to assess the quality of process & packaging materials and to measure and improve process controls.        
  • Provide front-line leadership in maintaining a “quality assurance” culture.
  • Staying abreast of current and pending requirements, developing and maintaining internal policies and procedures, and managing ongoing compliance.
  • Be the key contact for plant related issues and keep Quality Manger abreast of these issues.
The minimum qualifications for this position includes:
  • This position requires a Bachelor’s degree in Science such as Chemistry, Food Science, Biology or related field.  An in-depth knowledge of current quality theories, methodologies, tools and practices is also required. 
  • 5-10 years of experience in quality assurance within the food industry. 
  • Working knowledge of Statistical Process Control and Root Cause Analysis (Cause Mapping) is preferred/plus.
  • Specific knowledge of FDA regulations, Good Manufacturing Practices and HACCP programs.
  • Experience implementing or maintaining a GFSI recognized audit scheme (FSSC 22000 preferred).
  • Working knowledge of specification development.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to make presentations, facilitate meetings & provide training are essential. 
  • Excellent computer skills in a Windows based environment; excellent Microsoft Office skills.
  • High sense of urgency and ability to achieve priorities.
